Tour Details

A small group walking tour of Budapest and its Art Nouveau architecture. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the "golden-age" of Budapest, the capital of Hungary was a center of art and intellectualism. On this 3 hour small group tour with an expert in art or architecture, we explore the stunning architecture from this time period and discuss the politics, economics and culture of the time. At the turn of the 20th century, neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau buildings emerged to change the landscape of the city. We will begin on Andrassy Street, the hub of economic growth for the city in the 19th century, and continue on to visit the Opera House, Academy of Music, and the Paris Department Store, a famous masterpiece of Art Nouveau. During our time, we will also look at the emergence of the bourgeoisie, and how changing social conditions sparked new ideas and aesthetics for the city as a whole. Since our group is small, we will have plenty of time for questions and discussion. At the end of our time together, we will come away with an understanding not only of the architecture of the Golden Age, but the social and political current that inspired this movement.
