Tour Details
Join this one Day Celtic Tour which will bring you to one of the most ancient parts of Ireland. The Celtic day tour brings you to the historically significant Boyne valley situated in County Meath-the Royal County- from where the ancient High Kings of Ireland once ruled. Loughcrew is the site of multiple passage tombs from the Neolithic age, situated on 3 hills overlooking the rolling Irish landscape, and is a magical place. Being off the beaten track (we walk up a hill / small roads to get there) this site is an undiscovered gem, and much quieter than the more commercialised tombs such as Newgrange and Knowth. Get up close and personal to pre-history in these cairns with its still intact rock art ,lavishly decorating the inside walls-built more than 500 years before the first pyramids! We will follow a scenic route through lovely countryside to Trim Castle. Trim castle is the best preserved, most impressive example of Anglo-Norman castles in Ireland. It offers a spectacular insight into the lives and traditions of the people from the middle ages, so it comes as no surprise that it was used as a backdrop to the movie Braveheart. Next we travel to The Hill of Tara, which is best known for having been the royal residence of the ancient High Kings that ruled Ireland in Celtic times and beyond. It is said that a quarter of Ireland's landscape can be seen from this hill. Let your imagination go and picture an ancient Ireland where Neolithic man would worship on these sacred hills, or where Celtic contenders would be confirmed as High King when the "Stone of Destiny" roars. Monasterboice is a monastic settlement ,dating from the 6th Century, featuring some of Ireland's best preserved Celtic high crosses , an old bell tower and ancient church ruins , all in a peaceful countryside setting. The Celtic high crosses here are some of the best examples of the religious art sculpted on rock, used by the monks to instruct the pagan Irish about Christianity. Finally you get an informative and interesting walking tour of the historic town of Drogheda . This town has held back many attackers but was sacked by Oliver Cromwell, and is home to the severed head of Saint Oliver Plunkett - a martyr for the Catholic faith, still to be seen today in St Peter's church. After your walk you will have some free time in Drogheda. Explore the narrow streets or join us for whiskey tasting with a whiskey connoisseur (optional), before heading back to Dublin. We arrive back in Dublin at around 6 pm.
